Industrial lasers are available in a variety of types and configurations. The most commonly used types are CO2 and Nd:YAG. CO2 are the popular choice for marking and light cutting, because they can be shielded with transparent lexan sheeting, and are more easily enclosed. However, CO2 lasers are more limited in the materials which can be marked or cut. Nd:YAG lasers are more versatile in the materials that they can handle. They are also amenable to fiber optic delivery to the cutting nozzle, making them better suited for intense automation applications. However, Nd:YAG lasers must be fully enclosed to prevent occular damage, and can only be viewed through special materials.
