Project Portfolio>Manual Stations>Head Performance Tester
Overview:

The head performance tester tests the function of electronic toothbrush heads using a Keyence laser displacement sensor and a electromagnetic drive unit.

Process Description:

The brush head is loaded into the drive unit, and clamped from above using a Bimba dual-rod cylinder. Once the brush is loaded, the brush head is activated at the correct frequency and drive amplitude, and the amplitude of the head is then measured. The peak amplitude is then compared to a pre-set window, and an indicator light is lit to indicate whether the brush head passes or fails. The brush is then unclamped and unloaded.

Technical Challenge:

Any dynamic resonant system is troublesome in production. In this cases, the behavior of the device was very dependent on mechanical stiffness of the drive fixture and clamping fixture. Because the device needed to match a laboratory standard, several iterations of these devices were needed to "tune" the workholding system to match.
